How do we book a trip?

Send the dates and the group size, and say what the trip has to achieve. A twenty-minute call follows, then a written proposal inside 48 hours. A 30% deposit confirms the booking. The balance falls due 14 days before departure. Institutions are invoiced and settle by transfer.

These are working plants. Nobody owes a visitor a look inside. So we ask in writing, weeks out — KenGen at Olkaria, the Geothermal Development Company at Menengai. Olkaria carries most of Kenya’s 950 MW of geothermal, 40 to 45 per cent of the country’s electricity. Your proposal marks which sites are confirmed and which are still open.

The vehicle and driver are yours for the trip, and every meal is in the price. On Turkana the Nairobi–Lodwar flight is too. Outside the price: park and reserve fees at the gate; the Kenya eTA at $30; travel and medical insurance with evacuation; drinks from the camp bar; tips. Your proposal names the gate fee for your dates.

The road is the risk. No night driving, and seat belts in every row. On the long northern legs we stop on a schedule. Inside the fence the plant’s rules govern. There is a briefing at the gate, and nobody skips it. Steam lines run at pressure, and the ground near a wellhead is hot.

A 30% deposit confirms the booking, and the deposit itself is not refundable. Cancel 30 days or more out and everything else comes back. Cancel 15 to 29 days out and half of what you paid beyond the deposit comes back. Inside 14 days there is no refund. Report fees stop being refundable the day writing starts.

Boots for Loita and for the Hell’s Gate gorge floor, which is loose rock and uneven underfoot. Trainers will not do. Naivasha is high, so the sun bites by day and the evening turns cold. Turkana runs into the high thirties, so bring long sleeves. At Olkaria, closed shoes — the hard hat and hi-vis go over them.
